- Raise Your Voice -Silent Masses is no longer going to tolerate the continuing injustices and atrocities inflicted on the people of Darfur. Please read our sample letter which will be addressed to the following political leaders and institutions:
Dear Mr, Mr, Mrs etc, I am writing to you to express my outrage, through Silent Masses whom I have authorised to represent my voice and to report back to me with their progress as regards the current situation in the Darfur region of Sudan. I am one of the voices of the Silent Masses and together we wish to express our likeminded opinion that the genocide and destruction in Darfur must stop. I am fortunate to live a relatively secure and peaceful life here in this country as I believe are you. The political situation that is on going has failed to address the continuing rape, murder, destruction and ethnic cleansing of Darfur. In this day and age we enjoy the benefits of a modern civilised society; the same cannot be said for the viciously hunted people of Darfur. They have the same legal, moral and ethical entitlement protection under the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The recent attempts by the “international community”to stop the genocide and wanton destruction in Darfur while noble in themselves, falls pitifully short of the mark. Under resourced African Union peace keepers, unenforced or unpoliced peace agreements, woefully inadequate financial and logistical recourses for the millions of displaced people and refugees and the failure to punish the Sudanese government for the grievous crimes that it is facilitating through inaction and complicit support for the Janjawiid militias. The pathetic response to the crisis in Rwanda should have been the straw that broke the camels back with regard to addressing and adequately dealing with humanitarian conflicts but the “International Community”. We are once again dragging our feet and being non committal both practically and financially. It must fall to the leaders of the European Union and others to push the United Nations General Assembly to act decisively and bring this unacceptable situation to a satisfactory conclusion. Platitudes are no longer enough. Action on the ground is imperative whether the enforcing troops are ‘blue helmets’ or NATO troops as muted for the Lebanon. On going peace and political talks will and should continue but while they are continuing these people need protection. I call upon you as an elected politician to exert the strongest possible constructive pressure in your official capacity to bring about the right political climate that will address this unacceptable politically and ethnically motivated catastrophe to a swift, just, peaceful and lasting conclusion. The ‘International Community’ must act swiftly if any moral ascendancy is to be retained.
